How to Transition to Clean Beauty

Author: Jazmin Alvarez, Founder of Pretty Well Beauty

One of the most popular questions I receive from people is, “Where do I start?” Transitioning from conventional beauty and personal care can be an overwhelming obstacle since the growth of clean beauty has been massive in the last 4 or 5 years.  It seems like every day there is a new brand and/or product hitting our inboxes with claims to solve all your skin care woes.

What I say to people is the following:

Go Slow:

And don’t feel pressured to throw everything away and start from scratch.  That isn’t practical or economical for most people

The 3 products I recommend starting with include:

Non-toxic deodorant, lipsticks, and facial serums.  I recommend these as a starting point for a variety of reasons.  The aluminum found in traditional anti-perspirants have been linked to types of breast cancers according to the CDC.  This is also the product that takes the longest to get used to and to find the one that works with your unique body chemistry.  Full disclosure, you will smell as you detox but this is temporary and eventually, the stink will subside.  I recommend lipstick because most conventional lipsticks have traces of lead in them (while lead is a natural element, it is toxic for human consumption) and the average woman will ingest over 5 pounds of lipstick in her lifetime. And finally, serums which should be seen as an investment also due to the amount of time it will be on your skin if used morning and night.  You can phase out the other items like face washes, and body soap (i.e., items that are only on your skin for a matter of seconds) slower.

Have patience:

We live in a world where we are used to instant gratification and unfortunately that isn’t always the case with clean beauty.  It’s a slower process because you are working with nature and everything natural needs more time to fully produce results.  6-8 weeks is the average I like to give a product to deliver results.  Sometimes it can be faster depending on the product but just give it some time if you don’t see results within a few days. Trust me, the long-term effects will be worth the wait.

Keep the process fun and it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach, check out some of my favorite products below for some shopping inspiration!
